  • AFRICAN AMERICAN QUILT DOCUMENTATION DAY Free washingtonian
🕐 10:00am - 4:00pm 📍 National Museum of Women in the Arts, 1250 New York Ave NW, Washington, DC

A free community event where African American families can bring heirloom quilts to be photographed and documented, helping preserve family and cultural history. WASHINGTON, DC — The African American Quilt Documentation Study Group \(AAQDSG\) will host a free quilt documentation event in Washington, DC on Sunday, November 1, 2026, inviting the African American community to bring family quilts in to be documented, preserved, and honored as part of our shared history. Date: Sunday, November 1, 2026 Time: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Location: National Museum of Women in the Arts, 1250 New York Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20005 Cost: Free — pre-registration required \(time slots are limited\) Register: https://aaqdsg.org/events Since the 1980s, quilt documentation has been used to preserve family legacies and record the social, cultural, and artistic significance of quilts. African American family quilts have historically been excluded from this process. Most exist today with no documented history of the quilt or its maker — what's known has been passed down orally and never recorded. "Documentation is how we hold onto that," said A'donna Richardson, Director of AAQDSG. "It's an act of honoring our ancestors, of making sure the work of the quilt maker's hands is remembered. It's a way of saying: our ancestors mattered, what they made matters, and the stories tied to their quilts matter." The process reaches beyond individual families. Documented quilts become part of the historical record that scholars, museums, and researchers rely on to understand African American creativity, survival, faith, and community. Without this work, those stories remain untold and the historical record remains misrepresented and incomplete. We are inviting the African American community to bring their family quilts, in whatever condition \(the older, the better\), to the November 1 event to have them photographed and documented, and to share the stories behind them. • History Paintings in Progress: Gari Melchers' Mural Studies Cost unknown washingtonian
🕐 10:00am - 4:00pm 📍 Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont, Fredericksburg, VA

An exhibition of Gari Melchers' mural studies, showing how the artist developed history paintings for public buildings, with sketches ranging from inches to nine feet. This exhibition will be on view until January 15, 2027. Please check www.GariMelchers.org for hours and days of operation. America 250 inspires an exhibition of Gari Melchers' history paintings. During his career, patrons commissioned the artist to paint historic subjects for public buildings. Over life-size scenes fill their designated spaces in prominent libraries and two state capitols. The subjects range from allegory to posthumous portraits, for which the artist aimed to depict historically accurate appearances. General Nathanael Greene, Commodore Oliver Perry, and Mark Twain are among them. These paintings represent perspectives of their time, and prompt reflection on the lessons of history. The GMHS collection has dozens of studies for these murals, providing a rare opportunity to see the artist's process as he developed some of the final compositions. Neither intended nor conserved for public view, these sketches and paintings were saved by the artist nonetheless. The types of drawing surfaces, his design variations, and signs of use and aging provide a visual record of artistic activity, and range in size from mere inches to up to nine feet tall.

  • Interwoven: A Tradition of Textiles Free washingtonian
🕐 10:00am - 5:00pm 📍 Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens, 4131 Linnean Ave NW, Washington, DC

An exhibition exploring the artistry and cultural significance of textiles, from historic lace and liturgical vestments to contemporary fiber works. Textiles have long served as both functional objects and extraordinary works of art, woven into the fabric of everyday life and elevated by generations of makers. Hillwood's upcoming exhibition will be the first to focus on this essential yet unexplored aspect of the collection, showcasing the remarkable artistry, technical mastery, and cultural importance of textiles across centuries. Drawing from Hillwood's rich holdings, the exhibition invites visitors to consider the enduring power of textiles, not only as decorative or domestic objects but also as expressions of identity, devotion, innovation, and exquisite craftsmanship. Marjorie Merriweather Post's Collection Marjorie Merriweather Post maintained a reverence for textiles throughout her life, preserving antique lace samples, apparel from her girlhood, and examples of textile work created by the women in her family, including her mother, Ella Letitia Merriweather \(1853-1912\); her paternal aunt, Mary "Mollie" Stanley Post \(1860-1925\); and her grandmother, Caroline Lathrop Post \(1824-1915\). Post applied the same criteria to textiles as she did all her collecting: exquisite artisanship and intricate details. She collected handmade lace pieces and resplendent liturgical vestments and textiles from the Russian Orthodox Church, furnished her homes and personal spaces with sumptuous fabrics, and attired herself and her three daughters in the finest of fashions. Post also maintained a progressive approach to repurposing textiles, such as snipping embroidered sections of a daytime ensemble for an alternate use and upholstering chairs with an antique quilt. Textiles on View Organized into four sections, the exhibition will explore centuries' worth of historical textiles; the act of creating such fiber-based pieces; form and function, including lace, embroidery and need...

  • To Hear Her Speak: Black Women and Shakespeare Free washingtonian
    🕐 11:00am - 6:00pm 📍 Folger Shakespeare Library, 201 E Capitol St SE, Washington, DC

An exhibition at the Folger Shakespeare Library exploring the historical impact of Black women in Shakespearean performance and their creative use of his work. For centuries, Black women have claimed Shakespeare, reshaping his words to assert their humanity, creativity, and power. To Hear Her Speak brings these voices into focus for the first time. Curated by Dr. Patricia Akhimie, Director of the Folger Institute, this landmark exhibition explores the histories of Black women in Shakespearean performance and highlights the ways in which Black women have engaged Shakespeare’s language, stories, and characters in their work. To Hear Her Speak also builds on new research about the presence of Black women in early modern Europe, and shows how they were represented \(and misrepresented\) by artists and writers of the day, including Shakespeare, whose Sonnet 130 inspired the exhibition’s title. Nearly 100 objects ranging from photographs, playbills, posters, books, diaries, illustrations, and costumes draw from the Folger collection as well as key loans. Together, they document the stories of Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Lorraine Hansberry, Mae Turner, Esther Rolle, Phillis Wheatley, and many others. To Hear Her Speak invites visitors to listen closely to the Black women who have used Shakespeare to shape careers, challenge exclusion, and insist upon their place in history. As actors, scholars, authors, artists, musicians, directors, and so much more—Black women have spoken Shakespeare’s words into new possibilities.

🕐 2:00pm - 3:45pm 📍 National Gallery of Art - East Building Auditorium, 6th and Constitution Ave NW, Washington, DC

A free screening of 'Powwow People,' a documentary centered on a contemporary Native gathering, with a short Inuit-focused film before it. Powwow People is a vérité-style documentary grounded in the lived experience of a contemporary Native gathering. Rather than entering as outside observers, the filmmakers organized the powwow themselves, inviting dancers, singers, vendors, and community members to participate in making the film. Over one day, the film follows four central figures—Gina Bluebird, who frames the powwow’s shape and guides its setup; Ruben Littlehead, the emcee whose presence anchors the moment; Jamie John, a nonbinary dancer imagining the future of these traditions; and Freddie Cozad, a singer and drummer considering the past. The film culminates in a 30-minute unbroken shot of a Northern Traditional dance special, drawing the viewer into the textures, movement, and rhythms of the powwow. It is both a reflection of a beloved and complicated community and a gesture toward the continuities of Native life. As film curator and producer Jason Ryle put it, “This is not a document of a powwow. It is a powwow in cinematic form.” \(Sky Hopinka, Ho-Chunk Nation/Pechanga, 2025, DCP, 88 minutes\) Preceded on November 1 by Tuktuit: Caribou, which explores Nunavut, a territory where the Inuit people coexist with the flora and fauna in a holistic way. \(Lindsay McIntyre, Inuk, 2025, 15 minutes\) Preceded on November 29 by The Early Sun, Red as a Hunter’s Moon, a short that presents a collision of time fragments and Kiowa memory. • MAGGIE KOERNER "UPSTATE TOUR" $20 - $25 washingtonian
🕐 7:00pm 📍 Songbyrd, 540 Penn Street NE, Washington, DC

Singer-songwriter Maggie Koerner brings her Upstate tour, drawing on a career that includes fronting Galactic, festival dates, and collaborations across genres. Right after getting her bachelor's degree in psychology, Maggie caught the attention of Brady Blade \(Emmylou Harris, Dave Matthews Band\) who produced her debut album, Quarter Life \(2011\). Shortly after the release and on the advice of fellow musician David Shaw \(The Revivalists\), she moved to New Orleans. Upon moving to New Orleans, it didn't take Koerner long to write another album she would record and produce herself, Neutral Ground \(2013\). It was around this time that she had the opportunity to take over as the front-woman for Galactic, gaining international attention for her fiery performances and commanding presence touring alongside Widespread Panic, Charles Bradley and Dr. John. Her songwriting and vocals are featured on Galactic's albums Carnivale Electricos \(2012\) and Into The Deep \(2015\), both of which feature singles she co-wrote with Shaw, "Hey Na Na" and "Dolla Diva." In 2015, Koerner left Galactic to focus on her music again which has included a string of festival performances including New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Austin City Limits, Pemberton Music Festival as well as tours alongside The Revivalists, Band of Horses, Marcus King, The Head & The Heart, Shakey Graves, Tank & the Bangas, Warren Haynes, Gov't Mule & more. As her momentum continued to grow, Koerner reached out to the UK-based singer/songwriter Fink who wanted to collaborate with her through his R'COUP'D imprint via Ninja Tune. The result, an EP titled Dig Down Deep, was released in 2016 and showcased an ever-evolving Koerner. Fink's sparse production emphasized the intensity of her vocals creating an intimate, yet powerful listen. The album was well received by CLASH Magazine who proclaimed "Koerner is rather special talent…" and highlighted her "remarkable sense of depth and songwriting…" Koerner continued t...

During the Battle of Valcour Island on October 11, 1776, the gunboat was hit by a 24-pound cannonball near its bow and sank to the bottom of Lake Champlain. A salvage team found and raised the boat in 1935, and it was eventually moved to the National Museum of History and Technology \(the museum’s original name\) in time for its opening in 1964. After 160 years underwater and decades on display, the Philadelphia is undergoing a customized treatment to clean and stabilize it with the latest conservation technology in order to ensure the survival of the vessel for generations to come.
